2023 Volkswagen Jetta GLI
Engine
First and foremost, the Jetta GLI comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission. If you’re anything like my family, that might make you excited to hear, as they sit firmly on the “manual transmissions are better than automatic transmissions” debate. On the other hand, if you’re more like me (someone who would rather walk to their destination than attempt to drive there in a manual, you can get a 7-speed DSG dual clutch automatic for a slight upcharge). In other words, the car does the shifting for you for only a small price adjustment and large peace of mind. The starting MSRP of the Jetta GLI ia $31,345.
Volkswagen describes the Jetta GLI as the meeting point between sophisticated style, heart-racing power, and aggressive performance, and the Jetta GLI has lived up to the hype with its turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylinder engine that, for the manual, can zoom from a standstill to 60MPH in only 6.1 seconds. The GLI also features 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The manual and automatic feature high fuel efficiency: 26MPG city and 36MPG highway with only minor variation between the two. The only drawback to the automatic is a slight hesitancy to downshift during spirited cornering.
Interior Features
The Jetta GLI also features a variety of fun and luxury bells and whistles:
- Heated seats
- Ventilated power seats
- Leather Upholstery
- 400 watt 8 speaker beats audio system
- Panoramic Sunroof
- Wireless Charging
For the infotainment system, the GLI brings an 8.0 inch touchscreen system, not to mention the 10.3 inch digital gauge cluster. A customizable ambient lighting system in the interior makes the cab of the vehicle a cozy place, and the trunk has a surprising amount of space for a vehicle the size of a Jetta. When tested, the Jetta GLI could hold up to seven carry-on bags.
Safety Features
To top it all off, the GLI features a slew of safety features including a rear-view camera system, a safety cage for structural protection in the event of an accident, an Intelligent Crash Response System that can turn off the fuel pump, unlock the doors, and activate the hazard lights in the even of a crash that deploys the airbags, and an automatic post-collision braking system that automatically slows down the vehicle after a collision so that the chance of further impact is reduced. Volkswagen knows that collisions happen, so safety features to protect the driver and passenger in the event of a crash help prevent injury and reduce the chance of further collisions.
