A new year model always brings new changes to a vehicle. However, these changes become incredibly more significant when a model undergoes a redesign instead of acting as a carryover model. That is just what has happened with the Volkswagen Jetta!

What's New on the 2019 Jetta?

Firstly, the Volkswagen Jetta compact sedan has been rebuilt from the ground up for 2019! Its prominent front grille, sharp lines, and sloped roofline give it a sophisticated look. It has updated standard safety and tech features including LED lighting, App-Connect, and aluminum alloy wheels. The best part is that the 2019 Jetta has gotten wider and taller with a wheelbase of 105.7 inches, resulting in more headroom and legroom for everyone.

The 2019 Jetta has a starting MSRP of just $18,545 and an estimated EPA 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. The 2019 Jetta is powered by a 1.4-liter Turbo 4-cylinder engine at 147 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, paired to a six-speed automatic or available eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 2018 Jetta's base retail price is approximately $18,645 and it has a plethora of available driver assistance technologies, including Autonomous Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert, High Beam Control, Lane Keeping System, and a 6.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Of course, the 2018 Jetta comes with the transferrable Volkswagen People First Warranty of 6-year/72,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty coverage.

The 2018 Jetta comes standard with a turbocharged 1.8-liter and available 2.0-liter paired with the standard 5-speed manual transmission with a six-speed automatic upgrade available (both engines have been dropped for 2019) and gets an estimated EPA of 28 mpg city and 38 mpg highway-slightly less than the 2019 model year.

2017 Jetta

You can get a used 2017 Jetta from about $12,000 to $20,500, based on mileage, condition, trim level, tech features, and location. Not much has changed from the 2017 model to the 2018 model, so if you're on a budget, the 2017 Jetta is a really good option in saving money. The 2017 Jetta seats up to five passengers, has a 6.3-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth, and a USB port. Higher trim levels include a larger Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and satellite radio.

The 2017 Jetta received a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Every 2017 Jetta trim level comes with a rearview camera, however, you have to look into higher trim levels for advanced safety features such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and forward collision warning with automatic braking.

The 2017 Jetta S and SE come standard with the 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine with an estimated EPA of 28 mpg city and 38 mpg highway. The 2017 Jetta SEL comes standard with the 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, and the 2017 Jetta GLI comes standard with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder.

2015 Jetta

2015 Jettas range in price from $9,618 to $18,560 depending on mileage, condition, model and trim level, safety and tech features, and location. The 2015 Jetta is available in seven models: base, S, 1.8T, 1.8T Sport, TDI, GLI, and Hybrid SEL Premium, and most models are available in two different trim options: SE and SEL. The 2015 Jetta is available with four different engines: the standard 115-horsepower four-cylinder engine in the base Jetta S models, a 170-horsepower turbocharged engine, the performance 210 horsepower in the Jetta GLI, and the 150-horsepower turbodiesel engine in the Jetta TDI.

Each of these engines is paired with three transmission choices depending on the model; a five-speed manual, a six-speed manual, or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Estimated EPA rating range from 22 mpg city and 33 mpg highway with the base engine and automatic transmission, to 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway with the turbo and manual transmission. The 2015 Jetta is also available with a 170-horsepower hybrid setup that gets an estimated EPA of 41 mpg city and 48 mpg highway.

The 2015 Jetta was refreshed for a more sophisticated look. Cloth upholstery is standard with available leatherette seats. It comes standard with Bluetooth, an auxiliary jack, heated front seats, power-adjustable driver's seat, available sports seats, and two complete sets of LATCH child safety seat connectors. Available features include satellite radio, keyless entry, push-button start, navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a premium Fender audio system.

Conclusion

Whether you decide to buy a new or used Jetta, you're in good hands. Both are excellent options. It really comes down to two things; your budget and what features you are looking for. Used models will save you thousands of dollars, and new models have more safety and tech features available. The 2019 Jetta also has a significantly larger interior, which adds to its appeal as an economical family vehicle.
